How many times should you visit a chiropractor?

Aug 23, 2021 | Chiropractic Practice

With an impressive track record of providing relief from pain, chiropractic care is one of the most highly recommended forms of treatment for both acute and chronic conditions. However, some people are concerned about visiting chiropractors too often because it can become quite expensive. While there isn’t a hard-and-fast rule on how many visits you should make to your local chiropractor, here’s what you need to know:

The answer depends on what type of health problems you’re experiencing as well as the severity. There are four main categories identified that affect your spine and indicate the frequency in which a visit is needed.

These categories include:

Chronic spinal pain:

Chronic ailments such as back pain, neck stiffness, and headaches. In this case, a visit to your chiropractor is recommended several times a week to help you adjust your spine and relieve pain.

If that doesn’t work, then it’s important to see your doctor right away to figure out what caused the discomfort in the first place. If there are no other underlying issues causing pain, regular adjustments may be sufficient for relief from spinal discomfort.

Considerations: While some people can tolerate daily adjustments from their chiropractors, others may need less frequent visits. It all depends on how often you experience any discomfort or maladies related to either your upper or lower back region.

Frequency of visits: Certain conditions such as spinal fractures may require regular visits from a chiropractor for treatment. However, your chiropractor can determine what’s best for you based on your severity of pain or discomfort and any other diseases that an impacted vertebra might cause.

Chronic headaches:

Migraines and chronic headaches are no fun. If you experience frequent migraines or severe headaches, it’s important to visit a local chiropractor at least once a week to reduce stress on the upper spine area. Too much stress on one side of the body can result in a headache if not adjusted properly.

As with any ailment, visit your doctor if your headaches do not go away after regular chiropractic care. Your doctor can prescribe you medication to reduce headache pain.

Considerations: If your headaches or migraines don’t go away after visiting a chiropractor for a while, then it’s important to seek medical attention from your chiropractor. In some cases, you might have more than one problem causing pain in your head. There may be more than just impacted vertebrae that require adjustment by your chiropractor.

Frequency: The frequency of visits needed depends on the severity of neck and head pain. Doctors recommend patients visit their chiropractor at least once every other week during an acute phase of treatment if possible. Once symptoms are gone, then once a month visits to a local chiropractor can be sufficient.

If you experience chronic headaches that don’t go away with treatment, you should see your doctor the right way. In some cases, migraines are caused by an underlying health issue like diabetes and not necessarily impacted vertebrae. Your doctor can examine you and determine if other issues aren’t related to your spine or neck region.

Muscle spasms:

Many types of muscle spasms in the back can be treated with care provided by a professional chiropractic doctor. Too much pressure on one particular area of the upper spine can result in headaches and migraines. Chiropractors use a variety of techniques to treat these problems.

Some patients may require more specialized care than others to recover from headaches or migraines fully. If your doctor can’t help you, it’s important to see a local chiropractor who can figure out the root cause of your problem and set up an optimal treatment plan for relief.

Considerations: Everyone is different when it comes to regular visits with their chiropractor. Suppose you experience intense discomfort in one area of your spine or neck. In that case, it’s usually not necessary for a patient to visit every week unless advised by their chiropractor.

Some people, however, may feel better after 2-3 sessions with their chiropractor. Others may need to visit more often to relieve the problem completely. Suppose you suffer from these types of problems regularly. In that case, your chiropractor may give you stronger prescription pain medication while recommending that you visit a trained professional who can help reduce your symptoms and hopefully get rid of them for good. Again though, everyone is different, so it’s important to find out what works best for your body.

Complex Problems:

Patients who have muscle spasms in a specific area of their spine will usually experience relief after being treated by a trained professional (chiropractor) if they continue their treatment plan regularly. Many patients are nervous about going to a local chiropractor, but most are trained to help patients with many different ailments. One thing to consider is that muscle spasms also cause headaches. If your headaches don’t go away after taking medication or seeing your MD, then you could be dealing with more than just the common type of headache, so it’s important to get checked out by an expert.

Considerations: Every person will react differently (positively or negatively) when visiting their local chiropractor for relief from muscle spasms and migraines. It depends on what the patient has been diagnosed with and how severe their symptoms are. Not every patient will experience relief after treatment either. Again, though, most patients will feel a lot better after visiting their local chiropractor (especially if they suffer from chronic back pain or severe muscle spasms).

Contraindications: There aren’t any contraindications for visiting your local chiropractor. You should know only about when you’re pregnant because there haven’t been enough clinical studies performed to determine whether the baby would be in danger while the mother receives treatments.

Avoidance/Prevention: This depends on what condition you have been diagnosed with and how severely it affects your life. For instance, someone who has headaches for just one day every month and isn’t bothered by them too much may not need to see their chiropractor. They might require some over-the-counter headache medication. However, if the headaches are too severe or frequent, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately.

Daily Schedule: This depends on what you’re comfortable with, but many people choose to visit their local chiropractor at least once per week because this is how long it takes for most patients to experience relief from chronic muscle spasms and migraines suffered through throughout the week. Again though, everyone is different, so check with your chiropractor before planning a schedule like this (especially if popping prescription pain pills is your only course of action).

Always find out more about your condition by doing some research online or talking to previous patients who have dealt with the same type of symptoms that you currently have. It’s important to follow your chiropractor’s advice on what type of treatment you should seek out. Still, it’s also important to remember that your body is unique, and so is everybody else’s. Don’t be afraid to take matters into your own hands if you feel like visiting a local chiropractor can help relieve the symptoms in your body.
